History

Turbo Cars

The 1980s saw the rise of the Turbo craze, an era when the cutting-edge technology of race cars made its way into everyday road vehicles.

From practical family sedans to high-performance supercars, the phrase “Turbo Everything” became a mantra in the automotive industry, marking a revolutionary shift in car design and performance.

The fuel crises of the 1970s forced automakers to innovate, investing heavily in precision engineering and developing robust, high-pressure engines capable of supporting turbochargers. This made turbocharging not just viable, but a powerful tool for boosting both power and fuel efficiency in smaller engines.

Cars sporting a bold TURBO badge on their exteriors became instant symbols of speed and power, even if the actual turbocharger wasn’t always under the hood. Some manufacturers capitalized on the appeal by selling the badge itself as a mark of prestige, regardless of whether the car was turbocharged.

The true pioneers of this movement were models like the Mercedes-Benz 300SD and the Saab 900 Turbo, which debuted in the late 1970s. Once turbocharging was proven effective for passenger cars, automakers and consumers alike embraced smaller, fuel-efficient turbocharged engines throughout the 1980s, defining an unforgettable decade in automotive history.

A Boxy Design For An

‘Out-of-the-Box’ Era

The 1980s marked a transformative period in automotive design, where the introduction of computer modeling revolutionized how cars were developed.

Though the era is often remembered for its sharp, boxy aesthetics, these early digital tools laid the groundwork for the sleeker curves that would dominate in later years.

The 1980s brought a radical shift in both style and technology. Cars sported bold exterior designs with aggressive features like hood scoops and plastic rear window louvers—whether as factory options or aftermarket customizations. This blend of form and function gave everyday cars a sporty, race-inspired edge.

Inside, the cabins became a hub of innovation, with a focus on comfort and technology. Digital dashboards, trip computers, climate control systems, and powered seat adjustments were all signs of a growing technological sophistication.

Textiles replaced traditional leather, and plastic became the go-to material, not only replacing wood trim but also becoming integral to the structural components of the interior. On the exterior, plastic took over as well, replacing metal fenders, grilles, and trim, symbolizing the industry’s embrace of this versatile new material.

The 1980s were a decade of both innovation and bold design, forever changing the look and feel of the modern car.

The Core Of

TURBO

Drawing inspiration from the materials, styling, and bold shapes of the turbocharged era, the TURBO Collection pays homage to the unmistakable design language of the 1980s.

Created for those with a deep sense of nostalgia, the watch range channels the spirit of these iconic cars, echoing their distinctive features throughout every detail.

Housed within a robust 40mm case, the timepieces reflect the boxy, angular aesthetic of turbocharged vehicles, blending strength with a retro-cool edge. Scattered across the design are subtle, evocative references that invite the wearer to relive the essence of that automotive golden age.

The dial is a standout, inspired by the rear window louvers found on these classic cars. Crafted from recycled plastic and engraved with the iconic ‘Turbo’ badging at 4 o’clock, it strikes a perfect balance between heritage and innovation. Beneath the upper dial, a Super-LumiNova lower dial adds a dynamic neon glow that shines through the indices and louver-like slats, evoking the electric energy of the 1980s.

Adding to this nostalgic flair, vibrant HNBR rubber straps complete the look with a splash of color reminiscent of the era’s bold hues. Enhanced by 1980s-style decal patterns and a quick-release system, the straps offer both style and convenience, rounding off the design with a perfect nod to the illuminated, colorful decade that inspired it.
