The dial of the 901 RS is cut directly from a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7.
The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (“Rennsport”) was the top first-generation 911 and marked the very first production street/race 911 widely offered to the public. Only 1.580 were ever produced, but as the car is still considered by many Porschephiles to be the finest 911 ever built, prices on those still around have since skyrocketed, making it one the most sought-after and legendary sports cars ever built.
We managed to find parts from one these legendary Porsche Carrera 911 RS´s to go into our latest Limited Edition. But not just any RS...
When we initially started researching the origin of this particular car, we learned that the first owner of the car was the German rally driver Peter Rumpfkeil. During his 3-year ownership the car participated in several rallies, including the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally in the years 1976 and 1977 and Lombard RAC Rally in 1976.
In 1982 the battered 911 RS was acquired by Danish car enthusiast Jørgen Schultz, who initially was completely unaware of the rarity of the car. When he became aware that the car he had acquired was an original Carrera RS, he began restoring it over the next 3 decades until he finally sold the car in 2015, leaving several unusable parts most of which are now incorporated in the Limited Edition 901-RS watch. This – and much more – is all included in the scannable storycard, which accompanies every 901 RS Limited Edition timepiece.
And normally this is where the story ends, however...
On June 26th 2018, we received an email from a German gentleman named Timo Rumpfkeil. By pure coincidence Timo, the son of Peter Rumpfkeil, had learned that we were working on a Limited Edition Collection made from this very car. Timo was able to provide us with a far more complete background of this unique vehicle. In addition to a range of original images of the car, Timo could inform us that the first owner of the car was none other than the famous German Racing driver Clemens Schickentanz, who won both the GT European Championship and several World Championship rounds in the GT class.
Timo and his father have been chasing the original RS for decades – without success. And neither knew what had happened to the battered 911 RS – until now. Although we were not able to help Timo get his father’s beloved 911 Carrera RS back, we are beyond thrilled to pass on the DNA of the iconic RS racing legend in the form of the 901 RS Limited Edition.
