Description

The P51-01 is a limited edition timepiece made from salvaged 1st & 2nd generation Ford Mustangs.

The P51 pays homage to the iconic American muscle car, the Ford Mustang, with meticulous attention to detail from its materials to its design. Crafted with a dial fashioned from reclaimed Mustang parts, each P51 timepiece boasts its own distinct character, bearing unique marks and imperfections.

At 10 o’clock on the dial, you’ll find a reference to the VIN and production year of the recycled vehicle, while the accompanying storycard provides a comprehensive history of the specific car that contributed to your watch’s creation. The collection’s name, “P51,” nods to the origins of the Ford Mustang, drawing inspiration from the vehicle’s namesake, the WW2 Mustang planes, as attributed to its designer, John Najjar.

On the wrist, the P51 effortlessly merges striking aesthetics with unparalleled comfort, thanks to its ergonomic design featuring short lugs and a supple double calf leather strap. Notably, the P51 Collection earned recognition in 2016, securing a spot on the Wall Street Journal’s prestigious Top 5 list of watches priced under $5,000.

“Presenting the unexpected, the Mustang has the look, the fire, the flavor of the great European car. Yet it’s as American as its name… and as practical as its price.” – Advertising Copy for the 1965 Mustang

The beginning of

American muscle cars

In 1964, Ford unveiled a model that would usher in a new era for American sports cars: the Mustang. Despite later earning a reputation as the quintessential “muscle car,” the Mustang’s inception was far from that.

Lee Iacocca, then Vice President of Ford, aimed to provide mainstream American consumers with a car weighing less than 2500 lbs for under $2500.

On the very day of its launch, Ford dealerships witnessed an unprecedented frenzy, selling a staggering 22,000 vehicles. By the end of the first year, sales had soared to over 400,000, solidifying the Mustang’s status as an instant and unparalleled success.

In 1967, the Mustang underwent a significant transformation, resulting in the iconic ’67 Fastback, widely revered as one of America’s most aesthetically pleasing sports cars.

After navigating through various design upheavals in the tumultuous decades of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, Ford eventually revisited the essence of the original model in 2005.

The fifth-generation Mustang, crafted under the direction of designer Sid Ramnarace, paid homage to the iconic 60s model. With over 10 million Mustangs produced since its debut in 1964, it has rightfully claimed its place as the best-selling sports car in history.

Exposing metal

Raw and Real

Due to the vast production of Mustangs over the years, many have reached a point of irreparable damage. Our mission with the P51 Collection is to seek out these vehicles and repurpose their components, granting them a new life as the dial of a timepiece.

Our goal is to salvage the exterior parts and integrate them into the dial with minimal alteration, preserving the distinctive patina and raw aesthetic that defines the P51 Collection.

Once we acquire the parts, our next step is to shape them into P51 dials. The quantity of dials obtained from each car varies widely based on the availability and condition of parts, resulting in visibly unique patinas on each dial.

After stripping away any remaining paint or primer to reveal the bare metal, we meticulously apply a thin coat of transparent lacquer to achieve a smooth surface and prevent further oxidation.

Lastly, armed usually only with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), we embark on a journey to uncover as much history and information about the previous owners as possible.

Mustang DNA

In Every Detail

The P51 not only incorporates a fragment of a Mustang but also encapsulates the essence of multiple generations of Mustang vehicles. While the recycled dial rightfully takes center stage, numerous subtle and overt nods to the car’s design are integrated into every facet of the P51.

The distinctive cushion case pays homage to the Mustang’s rear profile, featuring laser-engraved sequential tail lights on the side. Atop the robust Miyota cal. 9130 movement sits a custom rotor adorned to resemble the hubcaps of the original 1964 model. Meanwhile, the user-friendly crown draws direct inspiration from the gas cap of the Mustang GT350.

On the dial, the 40-hour (minimum) power reserve cleverly masquerades as a fuel gauge, albeit with the F and E positions swapped. Positioned at 6 o’clock, the date display mirrors the layout of a vehicle’s odometer, while the central dial and hands adopt a vintage aesthetic reminiscent of the speedometer found in the original 1960s Mustang.
